How is the shuttle different from most spacecraft?
Most spacecraft fly only once and their rockets burn up in flight. The space shuttle is unusual because the craft and booster rockets can be used again. This means scientists can spend money on equipment which would have been too expensive to use only once. Satellites and other equipment are stored in the payload bay for use in orbit. Orbiting satellites can be put into the payload bay and brought back to Earth for repair.
