The Ariane V rocket
To enter space, rockets must escape Earth's gravity. This requires a speed of 17,400 mph (28,000 kph). Such speeds are easiest to reach by vertical takeoff. But it takes huge amounts of power to lift a spacecraft. The space shuttle has a big fuel tank and two booster rockets to supply this power.
