What are planets made of?
The planets that are closest to the Sun, from Mercury to Mars, are small, rocky worlds. They have a metal centre, or core, surrounded by a thick mantle of rock with a thin, rocky crust on the surface. The outer planets are very different. Jupiter and Saturn are made mostly of hydrogen. Uranus and Neptune have a rocky core surrounded by ice and hydrogen. Pluto is made of rock, with an icy coating.
