What are the canals of Mars?
Over the centuries, astronomers thought that the dark lines and patches on the surface of Mars might be canals, built by an ancient civilisation for carrying water. However, none of these so-called canals are visible in photographs taken by probes sent from Earth to Mars. Therefore scientists now believe that the canals are probably an optical illusion.
