Calendar of Festivals
Many festivals, such as national holidays, birthday celebrations, and anniversaries, take place on the same date each year. But sometimes the birthdays of kings and queens do not fall on a convenient day, so they have two birthdays - a real one and an 'official' one! Many religious festivals are very ancient and are based on the appearance of the Moon or on religious calendars. That is why festivals such as Easter, Eid ul-Fitr, and the Chinese New Year all take place on a different date each year.
In Sri Lanka a great procession is held every year to honour a holy relic, the Sacred Tooth of the Buddha; it is carried on the back of an elephant.
