May Day
May Day (May 1) has always been the date when northern Europeans welcome spring. In the Middle Ages, people wore green leaves in their hats and danced outdoors. Today, many old May Day customs remain. These English children in medieval dress are dancing around a 'maypole'. As they dance, coloured ribbons are twisted around the pole.
