Corpus Christi
|
| Carnival revellers celebrating Corpus Christi | Masks, head-dresses, and brilliantly coloured shawls are worn in the Andes mountains of South America during Corpus Christi (or body of Christ). This Roman Catholic festival in June celebrates the Eucharist (the bread and wine used at Holy Communion to represent the body of Christ). Christianity was brought to South America nearly 500 years ago by Spanish invaders. Although they adopted the Christian faith, many native South Americans kept their own traditions and costumes.
