Family Festivals
|
Some of the first festivals we enjoy as children are held at home. Many of these are special days for members of the family. All over the world there are days for mothers, fathers, boys and girls, brothers and sisters.
At these times we show how much we care for our relatives by giving presents and, in some countries, by holding private ceremonies.Children's festivals often include toys, dolls, or games. About 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece, young people gave their toys and dolls as offerings to the gods. It was a sign that they had become teenagers and were leaving their childhood behind them.
Many children's festivals have religious meanings. At the Izcalli festival, held in Mexico about 500 years ago, Aztec children went to the temple to have their ears pierced by a priest. The next day they danced and feasted in their homes in honour of the gods. | A Thanksgiving dinner |
