Fun Festivals
|
We don't always need a special reason to enjoy ourselves. Many festivals have no purpose other than making merry. Some of them started as religious or historical festivals, but the reasons for them have been long forgotten.Carnival was originally the last chance to feast before Lent, but today, carnival is mostly a festival of fun.
Halloween is a scary, but fun festival, held on October 31. It dates back through the Christian festival of All Hallows' or All Saints' Eve to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, a terrifying time when it was thought the spirits of the dead could be seen by humans.
The Celts were originally head hunters. They hung the heads of their enemies in their huts. At Halloween we still decorate our houses with heads made of pumpkins. Many festivals have no ancient history. They are simply a chance for people in a village or town to hold an outdoor festival or a summer fair. | Children 'Trick or Treating' on Halloween |
