Hindu Festivals
|
Spectacular festivals and ceremonies play an important part in the Hindu religion. Some of them date back over 4,000 years. Hindus believe that all living things have souls that live forever. One person, therefore, leads many lives, and during each life must learn how to understand God.
Hindus believe in one God called Brahma, the great spirit. But this single spirit appears in many different forms, which are worshipped as gods and goddesses. Each is honoured with his or her own special festival. Many Hindus go on pilgrimage. They travel to the River Ganges and other holy sites. Hindus bathe in the Ganges at a town called Varanasi. They believe that this will release their souls from the endless cycle of birth and death. | Hindus bathing in the Ganges |
