Diwali is a beautiful festival held at the start of the Hindu New Year, in October or November. Families light many small lamps in their homes in honour of Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune. Hindus around the world visit friends and relatives, giving each other cards and presents. They set off fireworks and have special feasts. Business people visit the local temple and pray for good luck in the coming year.
