Passing Through Life
|
All over the world, special events are held in honour of birthdays, growing up, getting married, and dying. These may be small family gatherings or occasions for large groups of friends or even whole villages to come together.
Presents are often given for birthdays. In China, an egg that is dyed red is given to a one-month-old baby because it symbolises happiness. In parts of Africa, teenage girls and boys must paint their bodies or go through ceremonies to show that they are ready to become grown-ups. People everywhere wear their best clothes for weddings, giving gifts or holding feasts.
Funerals may be sad, but in some countries they are happy events, too. People celebrate the life that has come to an end or gather to wish the dead person well in the spirit world. | A wedding |
