Make Your Own Piņata
Related Image
Have a party, Mexican-style! You can make your piņata with papier-mache.

You will need: 2 balloons, old newspapers, wall-paper paste (or flour-and-water paste), a brush, a pin, a knife, paints, string - and some sweets. An adult must supervise you when using the pin and the knife.

Start making the piņata one week before your party. Blow up two balloons, one large and one small. Tear up the sheets of newspaper into small pieces. Dip the pieces in the paste and layer them over both balloons. Let them dry overnight.

Now pierce the larger paper-covered balloon with the pin, until the balloon inside bursts.

When both balloons are dry and rigid, use paper and paste to join them together. The small balloon can be the animal's head, the large balloon its body.

Build legs and horns with toilet or paper towel roll middles. Wait for them to dry. Now pierce the larger paper-covered balloon with the pin, until the balloon inside bursts.

Ask an adult to help you cut a small hole in the back of the piņata, and fill it with sweets. Then cover up the hole with new paper and paste.

When this too has dried, you can paint the whole animal in bright colours. On the day of your party, hang it out of reach. Give your guests sticks and let the fun begin!
