Midsummer, autumn, and the dark days of winter have their own celebrations. Many of these date back thousands of years and include dancing, music, bonfires, and processions. Festivals around the world mark the sowing of seed, the coming of the rains, and the harvest. Some of the first religious festivals were held in Stone Age times, at the start of the hunting season. Hunters dressed in the skins and horns of animals and performed magical dances to bring good luck. Today, in countries from eastern Asia to western Europe, fishermen ask priests to bless their boats and nets each season.
