The Golden Temple
|
For the great festivals, many Sikh pilgrims visit the centre of their faith, the Golden Temple at Amritsar, to listen to readings from the holy scriptures. Amritsar is in the Punjab region of north-western India. The city was founded in 1577 by the fourth Guru, Ram Das, the 'servant of God.' The gilded domes of his Golden Temple rise above marble walkways and the still waters of the 'Pool of Immortality.' Pilgrims bathe in the pool before entering the Temple.
