Flags flutter, bands play loud music, fireworks explode in the sky. There are feasts and street parties. People put on their best clothes or wear special costumes, fancy dress, or masks. All over the world, people gather together to celebrate festivals, fairs, carnivals, and holidays.
Although they may have their roots in ancient traditions, some festivals today are just for fun. Other festivals are more serious. They mark the passing of the seasons or are part of our religious beliefs. Some festivals recall great events of the past or the lives of famous people.
