A British ambulance driver, washing his vehicle in an Iranian river, nearly lost a leg when attacked by a shark that had swum 140km upriver from the sea.
One of Shackleton’s Antarctic team of 1914-16 came close to death when he met a 3.5m leopard seal. It chased him across the ice and then dived into the water, only to break out of the ice ahead of him.
In one year a pride of lions in Kenya attacked and killed some 1500 people. The number of lions has been drastically reduced in recent years.
Wolf packs were once common in wild places all over Europe. In 1420 the citizens of Paris, France, were horrified to find wolves roaming the capital’s streets.
