Big Bang
The greatest volcanic explosion in recent history was the eruption of Krakatoa, Indonesia, in 1883. Its noise was heard across 8 percent of the earth's surface. The tidal wave that it caused destroyed 163 villages and killed 36,380 people. Rocks were thrown 55km up into the air and dust fell 5,330km away 10 days later.
