Sculpture and Painting
|
Painters and sculptors were craftsmen, like carpenters or stonemasons. Most Egyptian art that we see in museums or books comes from tombs. Painters decorated tombs with scenes from the life of the dead person. From these we can learn much about ancient Egypt.
Sculptors made figures from bronze, wood, and other materials, but especially stone. They had no iron tools, only copper or bronze, but they could still shape very hard or brittle stone.
(A) GRID
Painters in the royal tombs worked in teams and followed strict rules. They began by marking a grid pattern.
(B) DRAWING
On the grid, they drew an outline sketch. Later, it was coloured in.
(C) PAINTED POTTERY
The Egyptians did not often paint pottery, but they practised on broken bits, and sometimes made quick sketches.
