The Imperial Age
|
After Julius Caesar was murdered in 44 BC, civil war broke out. It was won by Augustus. He made himself commander of the army and could make laws and reject any decision of the Senate. He called himself First Citizen. His successors used the title 'imperator' (commander) from which our word emperor comes. This period of rule by the emperors is known as the imperial age.
Though the emperors were sometimes cruel rulers, they brought peace and prosperity to the empire.
(A) THE EMPEROR
After a successful military campaign the emperor held a parade called a Triumph. A holiday was declared and huge crowds turned out. Afterward sacrifices were made to thank the gods.
(B) ENEMY CHIEFTAIN
Prisoners were dragged through the streets. The leaders were usually executed but the ordinary prisoners were sold as slaves.
(C) CAPTURED WEAPONS
Heaps of captured weapons, treasure, and even prisoners were carefully arranged to look like scenes from the battlefield.
