Dickens often walked the city streets for 10 or 20 miles at a time. His descriptions of nineteenth century London gives readers an experience of thr sights, sound and smell of the old city.

Dickens lived during the Industrial Revolution. People worked very hard and there was little time for the celebration of Christmas.

It was the Christmas stories of Dickens, particularly his 1843 masterpiece "A Christmas Carol" that rekindled the celebration of Christmas in Britain and America.
