Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly old man who refuses to help people in need and hates Christmas. He has no friends since his business partner Jacob Marley died, and his workers are all afraid of him. When they ask for a little time off for Christmas, Scrooge's answer is 'Humbug!' On Christmas Eve Scrooge is visited by Marley's ghost who is wrapped in chains and moneybags. He warns Scrooge that three spirits will visit him and show him visions of his past, present and future to try and shake him of his miserable habits.
Scrooge's first visitor is the Ghost of Christmas Past. He shows Scrooge his own childhood, when he enjoyed feasting and making merry, but also how lonely he was.
The next ghost shows him Christmas Present, and the humble celebrations of the people who know him. He sees the tiny meal that is provided by Bob Cratchit, his clerk, for his wife and children. Amongst the children is Tiny Tim, who is very unwell. The poor wages Scrooge pays his staff means they cannot afford doctors fees, so Tiny Tim has only a small chance of getting better.
