An argument between the king and queen of the fairies is causing chaos in the human world.

Hermia's father wants her to marry Demetrius, but she is in love with another young man, Lysander. Lysander and Hermia run away together and become lost in a magical forest on Midsummer's night. Hermia's best friend Helena is in love with Demetrius so she tells him where the lovers have gone to try and win his heart. Helena and Demetrius follow them into the forest and also become lost. All four become prey to the tricks of the fairies in the forest and a night of midsummer madness ensues.

Oberon, king of the fairies is angry with Queen Titania because she refuses to give up her pageboy to him. To get his revenge, Oberon sends his servant Puck to give her a love potion and make her fall in love with a foolish mortal. This potion, made from a flower called Love in Idleness, makes you fall in love with the first person you see when you wake up.

Puck gives Titania the love potion and makes her fall in love with a man named Bottom. Puck has put a spell on Bottom to make him look like he has a donkey's head.
