The political situation in eighteenth century Ireland
In the early eighteenth century the power of England had reduced Ireland to little more than an English colony.
By 1729, Ireland suffered a famine (they did not have enough food to feed themselves), and the English government had taken control of much of Ireland's natural resources making it almost impossible for many Irish people to support themselves and their families.
