Technology has changed a huge amount in recent years. Only around ten years ago, our computers were not nearly as fast as they are today, so the kinds of games that could be developed could not do the same things as they can now. New games have so many areas, levels, twists and turns that quite often they take more than 100 hours to actually complete! You can change the perspective you are looking from, you can play against a number of other players, or if you're really in for a challenge, you can take on your computer.

But did you know that a Japanese company called Yamauchi Nintendo and Co (ring any bells?) made their first playing cards in 1933? This later became what we now know as Nintendo. So there you go - Nintendo started out making playing cards and now produces some of the most popular games in the world! Nintendo has sold more than one billion computer games worldwide, with Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong among the most well known characters.

The games company Sega first began in 1951, with amusement games like the coin-operated ones you might see in games arcades. Since then they have brought out a huge range of computer games, as well as games systems like the Sega Saturn™ and the Dreamcast™.

We all know that Sony launched the PlayStation™ in 1994 and the PlayStation2™ in 2001, but did you know that Sony started way back in 1946?

All of this just goes to show that computer game technology has only developed very recently. Nintendo, Sega and Sony are the main companies that produce console-based games, but there are also a huge amount of games that you can get through the internet and on CD-Rom. So little time, so many games to play!
