Thrust

Diagram showing thrust

Thrust is the force that moves a plane forward, and it is produced by the engines. Planes use either propeller or jet engines. Propeller engines work a bit like a fan: they spin around very quickly forcing air past them. A jet engine is a lot more powerful. It burns fuel a bit like a car, but instead of just letting the exhaust fumes out of a pipe, it forces them out of the engine with such power that the plane is moved forwards. Engines produce the thrust that makes aeroplanes go forward. To make an aeroplane move, thrust has to work against drag.
