On
the What If TV show, the poet Mike Rosen showed us some clever
tricks with words that can help you to speak a secret language. If you
missed it or need a reminder, here's Mike again:
"Hello everybody! Well
that's a boring thing to say - 'Hello Everybody'. You could make it a
bit more interesting by chopping up the words into little bits one letter
at a time. Instead of saying 'everybody, you'd say 'everybody, verybody,
erybody, rybody, ybody, body, ody, dy, y!'
If you say it really quickly, it sounds great!
See and hear how this works
with 'everybody' and 'shampoo' by clicking on the two examples below.
Then type your own word into the text box and click the green button to
see the bits of your word. Practise saying the bits of words quickly and
it will sound really funny."
"Mike here again. Here
are some ideas for speaking secret languages. The first one is called
Key Jug! With a bit of practice it's easy. Choose a word, take one letter
at a time, and put 'key' after each letter. After the last letter, say
'key-jug'. Click on the green button below to see and hear an example."
"Another secret language
is backslang. To speak backslang, take the first letter of a word, put
it on the end and then add 'a'. To see and hear an example, click the
green button below"
"I hope
you have fun speaking your secret languages. Keep practising!"
