We've seen that it wouldn't be
very sensible for everyone to ride bikes all the time. However, we've
also seen that riding bikes is good for the environment and our health.
So what's the answer? Well, we should use bikes whenever we can, and use
cars and other motor vehicles sensibly when we have to.
Bikes are good to use for short journeys in towns, cities
and the countryside. Going to school or to visit friends can be much more
enjoyable on a bike. Not only do you get some exercise, but you can avoid
annoying traffic jams and often get there quicker than you would in a
car. There is a lot of other traffic in towns and cities, so it's important
to be very careful. Ride with an adult if you can, and always wear bright
colours so you can be easily seen by people driving cars. Pay attention
to what's going on around you and remember to use lights at night. Be
safe and have fun!
When it isn't possible to use a bike, don't just jump
into a car! Try to use public transport when you can. Buses and trains
are quick, cheap and easy ways to get around, and are much better for
the environment than cars. They still use oil and pollute the environment,
but one bus with 40 people on it is much better than 40 cars carrying
one person each.
If you are going to travel in cars, try to fill them!
If you're ever sitting in a traffic jam, look at the cars around you.
How many have only got one or two people in them? Loads, I bet. This doesn't
make much sense as most of the cars are probably driving to the same place.
Car sharing means sharing cars with
other people who are going to the same place as you. Four people in two
cars is twice as bad for the environment as four people in one car. If
people who live near you go to the same school as you, go together in
the same car.
So although we can't all ride bikes all of the time,
we can help the environment by thinking carefully about how we get around.
It's as simple as that. Be aware of how cars damage the environment, and
think about how other types of transport can help to look after it. If
we all do that, then we can enjoy a cleaner, healthier world.
