How many times have you sat in a car in a traffic jam? You know the feeling - you really want to get somewhere, but you just seem to be going nowhere, hardly even moving. Traffic jams are very frustrating and make us stressed, tired and late.

Traffic jams happen, quite simply, because there are too many cars on the road. There are over 400 million cars in the world, and about 25 million in Britain alone - that's 1 car for every 2 people! As well as being annoying, traffic jams are also very unhealthy. You may feel safe in a car when you're stuck in traffic, but there is actually more pollution inside slow moving cars than on the outside.

Traffic jams aren't the only bad thing about roads - all the cars, vans, lorries and buses make them very noisy places. This is called noise pollution, and it's very annoying if you live or work near a busy road.

The number of cars on the road is increasing. To make space for all these cars and to try and reduce traffic jams, more and more roads are being built all the time. This may seem useful, but it is actually damaging the countryside and disturbing a lot of people's lives. Forests and woods full of wild animals and plants are split in two by new roads, and people who live in small, quiet villages suddenly have a motorway as their new neighbour!

If we all rode bikes, Britain would be a less stressed, happier and quieter place!

Well it seems that way, but would everyone really be happy? Go to Money to find out.
