Aiyegbeni Yakubu hit four goals past Middlesbrough on Saturday in another match-winning display for the south coast club. Thanks to his goals Pompey have finished the season in 13th place - a massive achievement for a side that was tipped for relegation at the start of the year. Big-spending clubs like Manchester City, Blackburn and Tottenham all finished below them, as did Wayne Rooney's Everton.

On Saturday Yakubu started his scoring spree after four minutes when Eyal Berkovic's neat pass beat Boro full back Danny Mills. The Nigerian raced onto the ball and hit it sharply between Mark Schwarzer and the post for his 16th goal of the season.

Ten minutes later Yakubu added another - and again Danny Mills was involved. This time the Boro defender managed to foul Yakubu in the area, giving away a clumsy penalty. The burly striker picked himself up to power the penalty past Mark Schwarzer, who dived the wrong way.

On the half hour Yakubu claimed his first-half hat-trick. Again it came from a Boro defensive mistake, this time Ugo Ehiogu making a mess of a Matthew Taylor cross. Instead of clearing the ball Ehiogu hit it straight at Yakubu who controlled the ball, beat a defender and then launched the ball into the back of the net from close-range.

That gave Portsmouth a 3-1 lead at half time, and it stayed that way until Teddy Sheringham scored in the 80th minute to finish his Pompey career on a high note. Three minutes later Yakubu finished the day's scoring with a neat shot from close range to make it 11 goals in 10 games - a priceless total for the club.
