Amphitheatres
Amphitheatres were the Roman version of our stadiums,
large arenas where people would go for entertainment. The huge Colosseum
in Rome is the most famous amphitheatre, and could hold about 50,000 people.
This is as big as many of our modern stadia. However, the Roman idea of
sport and entertainment was very different to ours. They would watch people
called gladiators fighting each other with swords. The fights were very
dangerous, and the gladiators would often get injured or even killed.
Gladiators would also fight animals like tigers, lions and bears.
