Sewers
The Romans were the first people to build proper sewers
and drainage systems. These were very important as they took away waste
that contains germs and could cause disease and illness. Water from bath-houses
would flow underneath public toilets, taking the waste with it. It then
joined the main sewer that ran out of the town. Homes and businesses had
their waste water running through pipes into the main sewer. Before the
Romans, people used to throw their waste into the roads. Roman sewers
made towns much cleaner, healthier places to live in.
