Style and Tone

Use language that fits the plot and theme of your story. For example, you wouldn't write about a picnic using the same sort of language you would use to write a science fiction story!

Wherever you can, use actions and speech to let readers know what's happening. In particular, try to present speech in direct quotes like "Shall we go to town?" instead of indirect quotes like "She asked him if they should go to town."

You don't have to use big words and complicated sentences to write well. In fact, simple words and simple sentences are often easier to read and understand, and are therefore more effective.

Carefully check each word, sentence and paragraph to make sure it is written in the best way and put in the right place. If it isn't needed, take it out.
