The Viking wrote using symbols called runes. Runes were
a bit different from the alphabet we use today. They were letters that
made up words, but they were also symbols that meant things on their own.
The Viking alphabet is called a futhark (foo-thark)
for the same reason as our alphabet is called an alphabet. This is because
the first two letters in the Greek alphabet are alpha and beta - together
they make the word alphabet. In the viking alphabet, the first letters
were pronounced f, u, th, a, r and k. Together they make the word futhark.

straight lines. This made them easy to carve into stone or wood. The Vikings
often used to carve their letters because paper and writing tools were
rare.
