Point of view

The point of view of the narrative is usually either 'first person' or 'third person'.

First person means the story is being told as if it happened to you, using the first person pronoun "I", as in 'I really wanted to get out of the room as fast as I could, but I couldn't move.' Writing in the third person uses "he", "she", and "it" pronouns, as in 'She was in a really good mood that day.'

Writing in the third person usually means telling the story from one character's perspective, and this is usually, though not always, the main character's perspective.

Whether you tell the story in the past tense or present is also something you will need to think about. Whichever tense you choose to write in, it’s important that you stick to one or the story will become confusing to your readers!
