Scotland had effectively been under English rule since 1296, when King Edward 1 of England invaded Scotland and forced the Scottish King, John Balliol, to abdicate. Many Scots rebelled against the English, leading to the War of Independence. William Wallace was the main Scottish rebel leader from 1297 to 1305.
