Father of 15 children, George III was a much-loved king for many years, from 1760. During his reign Gainsborough and Reynolds painted, Sheridan wrote plays, slavery was abolished in England and Australia was colonised. The American colonies achieved their independence from Britain in 1776. George died in 1820.
