Henry came to the throne as a child in 1422. He grew up to be a kindly man, but was often ill and ruled weakly. During his reign, rival groups began battling for the crown. Their badges were the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York. These battles became known as the Wars of the Roses, and lasted for many years. Henry was deposed in 1461 by Yorkist supporters, returning to the throne for only one more year, in 1470. After being deposed again, he was murdered in 1471.
