Richard ruled from 1377 to 1399. He encouraged the first great English poet, Chaucer. During the early part of Richard's reign, the Peasants' Revolt threatened to topple him, but he survived the troubles. Later, Henry of Lancaster, a cousin of the king, seized the crown and had Richard murdered.
