James was already king of Scotland when he came to the English throne in 1603, after Elizabeth I died without any children. He was the son of Mary Queen of Scots, who had been executed by Elizabeth. James united the crowns of England and Scotland. Guy Fawkes' 'Gunpowder Plot' in 1605 luckily failed to kill him, and he ruled until 1625.
